DANCER OF THE MONTH: Hollywood

“We have to look beyond ourselves and look to the future…”

These words ring true in the actions and character of July’s Dancer of the Month. Hollywood, of the Milwaukee Boppers (members: Larry, Ron, Scotty, Mary, Sabrina, Tracie, Shelly, Al and Hollywood). It is important to list the individual members of the organization because in speaking to Hollywood, it is clear that it is about ‘we’, and 'us’, not ‘I’. In fact, was rare to hear her speak of just herself; instead the importance of the collective was apparent in every thought and explanation. It would negate the recognition of being Dancer of the Month if, in word and thought, The Milwaukee Boppers where not identified along with or in substitute of Hollywood’s name alone. The Milwaukee Boppers is one of Milwaukee’s most successful, long-standing dance performance and teaching organizations in the community.  It is important to mention the dedication the organization has shown to the art of dance and support of community events and classes.

Hollywood has shown special interest in embracing and participating in other dance styles in the community. Added to her dance resume are Salsa, Meringue, Stepping, Ballroom, and Hand Dance.  She is able to learn and dance these styles with grace and performance quality execution and individuality. She credits her performance skills to the training within the organization. She also credits the music, stating,  “When that certain song comes on… it touches my soul, and that’s what you see on the floor”.

Hollywood’s character and integrity can also be seen on and off the floor. She is encouraging and positive and is able to remain sincere with those she encounters. As she explained, “It’s always about the music and the dance… never about me”.  She also advises as dancers, and instructors, we must look into self and see what reason there is to be a part. Why are we out here? It is her hope that the community can look beyond ourselves as individual and look to the future as a whole.

The Milwaukee Boppers are doing their part in ensuring the future of dance by teaching sophomore students at Riverside University every semester. Hollywood also encourages cross training of dance styles. Not everyone will enjoy, excel, or grow in the same dance style. Instructors play a key role in ensuring that students remain part of the dance community by guiding them through their options. The greater importance is the long-term success and enjoyment of the dance and music.

The hope for long-term success of the community and the importance of the collective within an organization are two things that Hollywood has made clear in her thoughts, actions, and words. Speaking with Hollywood was encouraging, positive and I do not want to leave anything out that the community can grow on. So as we honor Hollywood of The Milwaukee Boppers, take a moment savior some of the morsels of our conversation that can serve as wisdom to us all.

“We can’t worry about others – we just can’t do it. These are adult people and will do adult things. Be a good person yourself.”  - When asked about keeping away from scandal, and gossip.

“Praise people” - When speaking of instructors and classes.

“If you want to have a conversation with me and it’s a lie, then that’s you. That is your lie.” - When asked about gossip/rumors.

“My personal life is just that… Personal.” – When asked about maintaining her privacy.

“Our goal is to have you surpass us.” – When discussing the organizations’ goals for the students.

“Women will not pay to be mistreated or ignored… Our students and instructors purposely go out [with intent of dancing with each other]. “- When commenting on the concern from women who go out and not get many dances.
